The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts will hold an exhibition “The University Art Museum 2022 Spring Masterpieces: The Temptation of Tenpei” from April 2nd (Sat) to May 8th (Sun), 2022.
“Gaidai Collection Exhibition 2022 Spring Masterpieces Exploration Tenpei’s Temptation” introduces selected masterpieces from the collection of Tokyo University of the Arts, which consists of about 30,000 works and materials such as antique art, modern art, and contemporary art. It’s an exhibition to do. Focusing on the connection between Tokyo University of the Arts and Tenpei art in the 8th century, works and valuable materials related to Tenpei from ancient times to the present will be exhibited.
The Tenpyo culture of Nara, which blossomed under the influence of the international Tang dynasty, had a great influence on posterity. In this exhibition, masterpieces selected from the Tokyo University of the Arts collection will be exhibited. At the venue, from antique art such as “Ono Yukimi Miyuki Emaki” (important cultural property) and Kano Tsunenobu “Phoenix Figure Fengfu”, Kotaro Nagahara “Irimichiun” and Ichiro Shirakawa “Fukyu Search Kannon” etc. A wide range of works, including modern Western paintings and modern Japanese paintings such as Kano Hōgai’s “Sorrowful Mother Kannon” (Important Cultural Property) and Hashimoto Masakuni “Hakuun Beniki” (Important Cultural Property), will be exhibited so as to surround the exhibition room.
In the modern era, the focus of research and research on antique art began to be directed to the ancient city of Nara. Hōgai Kano, who accompanied Fenollosa and Tenshin Okakura to the Nara Ancient Shrines and Temples, sketched the collections and buildings surveyed at the temples and shrines. At the venue, “Nara Kan Yuchitori”, which is a 12-volume scroll of this sketch, will be exhibited.
