Every spring, Japan celebrates the blooming of sakura (cherry blossoms) like no other natural event. These delicate flowers hold special meaning for the Japanese, symbolizing fleeting beauty. Staying true to The Peninsula Hotels’ brand philosophy, which blends elegance with local culture, The Peninsula Tokyo proudly showcases the sakura spirit, inviting guests to join in the festivities.
This year, the hotel partners with renowned artists Mr. Shoryu Hatoba and Mr. Yoho Hatoba, known as Kamon father-and-son, to share their work globally. The hotel’s Lobby will feature their giant artwork titled “The Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art.” This artwork, standing seven meters high and eleven meters wide, depicts the hotel’s original crest shaped like a sakura flower on a historic painting from 1593. The artists specially design this emblem, incorporating a delicate ‘P’ for Peninsula. Printed on 107 strips of Japanese washi paper, the artwork blends seamlessly with the Lobby’s welcoming ambiance.
Kamon, or ‘family crest,’ has been used in Japan for centuries to identify individuals or families. The father-and-son duo, now in their third and fourth generations, infuse traditional Kamon creation with modern touches, using their artistic sensibilities and digital tools.
The art installation will grace The Lobby from March 21 to April 21. A reception on March 21 will allow guests to meet the artists, learn about the installation, and discover the Kamon art form while enjoying spring-inspired snacks and champagne.
Another beloved tradition at the hotel is the Sakura Afternoon Tea. Served on a silver birdcage stand, this themed tea features seasonal finger foods and sakura-inspired sweets, including homemade scones. Guests can indulge in Peninsula original teas while soaking in the art-inspired atmosphere and listening to live music. The Sakura Afternoon Tea is available daily at The Lobby from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm until April 30, priced at JPY 9,000 per person.
