The commencement of construction on the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s most ambitious undertaking to date has been formally declared by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The expansive project, known as the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley, represents a significant transformation in the Safari Park’s history spanning half a century. This new development will reshape the core of the Safari Park, converting the existing elephant habitat into a vibrant savanna, designed to spark curiosity and exploration.
Within the confines of Elephant Valley, patrons of all ages will have the unprecedented opportunity to engage with elephants on a profoundly personal level, fostering heightened empathy, comprehension, and admiration for these majestic creatures. This immersive encounter aims to ignite a genuine passion for wildlife conservation.
Encircled by elephants on multiple sides, including a skyward walkway affording a unique overhead view of the passing herd, visitors will be educated on the pivotal role that elephants play as ecosystem architects, as well as their intricate social dynamics. The unveiling of Elephant Valley will also serve as a platform to showcase the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s leadership in wildlife preservation, spotlighting its influential partnerships and honoring the vibrant cultures and local communities that coexist harmoniously with elephants.
At the heart of the Elephant Valley experience stands a two-story lodge, inspired by the lodgings frequented by explorers during their African safaris. This communal hub will provide an avenue for learning from educators about the captivating wildlife of the region, all while witnessing elephants gracefully traversing expansive watering holes. Meticulously curated by a team of skilled horticulturists and arborists, the lush vegetation in Elephant Valley captures the authentic essence of the African grasslands, stimulating the senses with its authentic sights, sounds, and aromas. The extensive new habitat will elevate the elephant herd’s experiences by introducing innovative features that adapt to seasonal fluctuations, closely mimicking the African savanna’s conditions throughout the year.
The repercussions of climate change, the complexities of human-wildlife coexistence, habitat depletion, and the menace of poaching collectively imperil elephant populations. Presently, African savanna elephants bear the classification of “Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Safeguarding these remarkable creatures has been a paramount objective for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance for an extensive duration. Collaborating closely with esteemed partners like Save the Elephants, The Nature Conservancy, Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service, and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya, the organization stands resolute in its commitment to elephant conservation.
Conducting scientific research both within Africa and amidst the elephant herds at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park has furnished an unparalleled opportunity to enhance our understanding of this species, thereby facilitating the development of targeted conservation strategies. The augmented knowledge of the intricate social behaviors of elephants and their comprehensive health requirements has endowed the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and its collaborators with valuable insights into the dimensions of triumphant conservation efforts for elephants.
The realization of Elephant Valley has been made possible through the generous contributions of numerous benefactors and the enduring support of Denny Sanford, a steadfast champion of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Notably, Sanford played a pivotal role as the primary benefactor for the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo, as well as for the educational television programming of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers, disseminated across a multitude of children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses, and various other establishments worldwide. Anticipated to reach completion in 2025, Elephant Valley stands as a testament to the enduring dedication and collaborative spirit fueling wildlife conservation initiatives.
