The Nikolsky Rows are an example of a gostiny dvor, a very distinctive Russian type of historic market complex. The complex is occupied by a hotel and the parking lot is transformed into a courtyard. The courtyard is used as a pop-up public space including hosting seasonal events in winter and summer.
The composition of the renovated courtyard, with its symmetry and a rigid structure, is in line with the principles of the Neoclassical building that surrounds it. The objects themselves are stylistically different to create an eclectic character so typical of traditional Russian winter fairs. The Rotating Triumphal ArchThe is the centerpiece of the courtyard which serves as the pivoting point of the composition and marks the crossroads where visitors choose their direction.
The Sliding Hill is a 19th century St. Petersburg staple. The hill is constructed of stage scaffolding and sided wood, with a Nordic look and modern Scandinavian architecture. In summer, the Sliding Hill is turning to an amphitheater with plants. The space is used to host workshops, lectures, and film screenings. Under the canopy, there is a summer bar.
In winter, the shopping street resembles the street from Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki, while in the summer it turns into a marketplace with a public kitchen garden.
