Kura Sushi Inc., a leading revolving sushi chain in Japan, announced on December 12 the launch of 70 new menu items at its upcoming flagship restaurant at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. Scheduled to open on April 13 in Yumeshima, Osaka, the restaurant will showcase dishes inspired by the 70 countries and regions participating in the Expo.
Known for its innovative kaitenzushi (revolving sushi) model, Kura Sushi is the only major chain in Japan serving sushi exclusively on conveyor belts at all its locations. Under the concept “Revolving Belts Unite the World,” the new Osaka-Kansai Expo restaurant will boast a record-breaking 338 seats and a 135-meter conveyor belt, the longest in the company’s history.
To celebrate global unity, Kura Sushi is introducing the “Hands・Hands Project,” featuring a special Expo menu crafted by its product development team. The 70 dishes aim to authentically replicate flavors from participating countries, with 24 items developed in collaboration with ambassadors and embassy representatives to ensure cultural and culinary accuracy.
The menu will also feature Kura Sushi’s Mr. Freshness antibacterial sushi cover, redesigned with red and blue handshakes symbolizing the Expo’s theme colors. The restaurant will create a dynamic dining experience where traditional Japanese sushi flows alongside international dishes, providing guests with a cultural journey akin to visiting a pavilion celebrating global cuisine.
Nationwide Preview of Special Menu
Ahead of the Expo, Kura Sushi will offer a sneak peek of the special menu at 550 restaurants nationwide starting February 7, 2025. Each location will serve one unique dish from the 70-item menu, turning every store into a “mini-pavilion.” Guests can enjoy a local taste of the Expo or explore all 70 dishes by visiting multiple Kura Sushi locations across Japan.
Revolving Sushi’s Legacy and Vision
The kaitenzushi concept gained popularity following its debut at the 1970 Osaka Expo and has since become a defining element of Japan’s culinary culture. With over 50 years of evolution, the revolving sushi industry now generates more than 800 billion yen annually. Kura Sushi is committed to expanding this innovative dining experience globally, bringing the unique appeal of Japan’s revolving sushi model to the world stage.
