The Hong Kong Tourism Board revealed its latest docufilm, “Hong Kong Classics Reimagined,” on Friday (17 May) at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. Premiering at the Marché du Film, this 60-minute showcase pays tribute to classic Hong Kong movies while stirring the wanderlust of film enthusiasts worldwide. Alongside the film premiere, HKTB launched a dedicated movie tourism guide on its official website, providing travelers with insights on transforming cinematic inspiration into memorable experiences in Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong Classics Reimagined” celebrates the rich filmmaking legacy of Hong Kong through six short films spanning genres such as thriller, action, comedy, kung fu, romance, and art. These shorts offer a captivating glimpse into Hong Kong’s unique allure and vibrant cultural heritage, reimagined by six different directors as a homage to the city’s legendary filmmakers. Featuring established and emerging talents in contemporary Hong Kong cinema, including Sylvia Chang, George Lam, and Karen Mok, the shorts were filmed at some of the city’s most iconic locations. Following its Cannes premiere, “Hong Kong Classics Reimagined” will continue to captivate audiences worldwide as it becomes available online.
Award-winning actress Sylvia Chang, who stars in one of the shorts, shared her filming experience, expressing a profound appreciation for Hong Kong’s beauty. She highlighted the city’s seamless blend of urban and natural landscapes, inviting visitors to explore its diverse scenery beyond shopping.
Veteran film producer Joseph Chan Sinn-Gi, responsible for producing four of the short films, expressed his deep affection for Hong Kong and its myriad offerings. He hopes visitors will frequent the city, embracing its dynamic spirit, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality while creating cherished memories.
Highlighting the allure of movie tourism in Hong Kong, the digital movie tourism guide aims to inspire travelers to explore the city beyond the silver screen. Offering a curated selection of experiences, it enables visitors to recreate the magic of iconic Hong Kong movies. Whether it’s riding the iconic Star Ferry for a romantic moment akin to Sylvia Chang and George Lam in the docufilm, browsing records at a stereo shop in the vibrant creative hub of Sham Shui Po to relive scenes from “Infernal Affairs,” taking an open-top bus to trace the paths of actors on motorcycles through tunnels as seen in Wong Kar Wai’s “Fallen Angels,” or joining a martial arts class in homage to Bruce Lee, travelers are encouraged to immerse themselves in the city’s cinematic charm firsthand.
