In 2023, Gora Kadan, a luxury ryokan in Hakone, unveiled Sushi Kadan, a high-end sushi restaurant located on the second floor of the former Kan’in-no-miya imperial family villa. On November 4th, the restaurant will celebrate its first anniversary by offering a special, exclusive menu, carefully curated by renowned Chef Masahiro Yoshitake of Sushi Yoshitake, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant for over a decade. Sushi Kadan’s anniversary menu will feature unique dishes available only at this Hakone location.
Gora Kadan, nestled in the serene natural beauty of Hakone, was originally built in 1930 as a summer retreat for the Kan’in-no-miya family, one of the four princely houses of Japan. In 1948, the villa was converted into a traditional Japanese-style inn (ryokan) and named Gora Kadan. The property, which spans over four acres, reflects modern architecture that blends seamlessly with nature, offering guests a tranquil escape surrounded by the beauty of Japan’s four seasons.
In 1991, Gora Kadan became a member of Relais & Châteaux, a prestigious global network of luxury hotels and restaurants, following a rigorous selection process. In 2002, the ryokan earned the Welcome Trophy, chosen from 469 worldwide properties, for its outstanding customer service and guest satisfaction. In July 2024, Gora Kadan achieved the highest Michelin Key ranking of Three Keys, part of the first-ever selection of Michelin Key hotels in Asia, further solidifying its reputation as one of Japan’s most luxurious ryokans.
The history of Gora Kadan is closely tied to the distinguished Kan’in-no-miya family, established in 1710 by Prince Naohito, son of Emperor Higashiyama. This prestigious family produced Emperor Kōkaku, the great-great-grandfather of Emperor Meiji. Prince Kan’in-no-miya Kotohito, the 6th head of the family, studied in France in 1883, where he graduated from both the Cavalry School of Saumur and the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr, founded by Napoleon. After returning to Japan, he built the Gora villa in 1930, which his son, Prince Haruhito, later converted into Gora Kadan after renouncing his imperial status in 1948.
