The New England Aquarium is celebrating World Ocean Day with activities that draw attention to the importance of protecting the ocean for future generations. Individuals of all ages are invited to Central Wharf on Sunday, June 4 to celebrate, learn about, and take action to safeguard special places in the ocean. The programming is centered around the global conservation initiative 30×30, which has set a goal to protect 30% of land and water by 2030. Although World Ocean Day is traditionally observed on June 8, the Aquarium aims to attract a larger crowd to Boston’s waterfront by providing weekend programming.
Outside the Aquarium on June 4, the public has the opportunity to participate in a range of free activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A “Ask a Scientist” booth will be set up on Central Wharf Plaza, where Aquarium scientists will be available to share their work in protecting the ocean and its incredible species. Each hour of the day will have a different theme, providing visitors with diverse insights.
Representatives from NOAA Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary will also join the celebration on the plaza, accompanied by a life-size 43-foot humpback whale named “Salt,” weather permitting. This interactive display allows attendees to appreciate the sheer size and magnificence of these marine creatures up close.
Furthermore, the Aquarium’s back tent will host a marine art station, featuring several vendors, including local artist and UMass environmental science student Martin Kalere. Kalere will lead an ocean animal art activity, inspiring aspiring scientific illustrators to create their own artwork.
Additionally, the ClimaTeens group from the Aquarium will lead a composting activity in the tent. Participants can learn about the impact of composting on climate change and discover composting options in their own communities.
Guests will also have the chance to explore marine protected areas at a dedicated booth. They can record their thoughts on these areas and gain a deeper understanding of how they can contribute positively to the ocean. The booth in the tent provides a direct means for participants to engage with their legislators, conveying their perspectives and concerns.
The Hispanic Access Foundation will be present to highlight Latino connections to the ocean and coast. Utilizing bilingual conservation toolkits, environmental community leaders will provide information on the crucial relationship between Latinos and the ocean. They will also emphasize the impact of water and climate issues on Latino communities and inspire others to take action.
Inside the Aquarium, there will be additional programming from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for guests who purchase tickets. It’s important to note that during busy times, such as weekends, guests are strongly encouraged to reserve tickets in advance as the Aquarium can sell out quickly.
Special presentations will be delivered by Aquarium staff, emphasizing the significance of taking local actions to protect the ocean and its global impact. These presentations will take place at various locations, including the penguin exhibit, the top of the Giant Ocean Tank, the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center, and the Atlantic harbor seal habitat.
Aquarium educators will lead an engaging activity centered around tracking ocean animals. The activity will highlight the importance of safeguarding critical areas, such as feeding grounds and nurseries, that greatly influence the survival of highly migratory species in the ocean.
Visitors, both inside and outside the Aquarium, will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting scavenger hunt. The hunt features three grand raffle prizes, including admission passes, New England Aquarium Whale Watch tickets, and a memorable sea lion encounter.
Starting May 28, the Aquarium’s summer hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. To ensure a smooth experience, guests are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance through the official website at neaq.org.
