One hundred years ago, this estate was transformed into an inn; today, it is the site of Hoshinoya Kyoto, a secluded resort providing guest pavilions that overlook the Ōi River. Though furnished with contemporary comforts, the pavilions maintain the sense of sophistication cultivated by Suminokura. The woodwork has been washed by Kyoto artisans to restore its original sheen. Bedroom walls are covered with karakami wallpaper, featuring delicate gold patterns that change colors throughout the day.
This year, Hoshinoya Kyoto will hold an activity “Summer Evening Firefly Hunting Boat” limited to one group per day from June 1st to 30th, 2021. Exclusively from the resort, the boat will take the guest out to tour the Oigawa River where fireflies fly. Kyoto-style bento box made by restaurant in Arashiyama and sake will be served to guest during the tour.
Arashiyama is one of the few areas in Kyoto prefecture where Genji fireflies live. Fireflies, which are also the season word for summer, has close connection with the people’s lives since the Heian period. Since the Heian period, boating has been held on the Oigawa (Ōi) River, where you can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons while enjoying waka poems and orchestra. In this activity, you can see the fireflies flying in the valley from the chartered houseboat, and some of the houseboats also have fireflies in bamboo baskets.
