I had the chance to chat with Filmmaker Dirk Gibson, who shared his motivations behind starting Treasure Game$ and integrating real-life treasure hunts into it.

“It goes back 30 years,” Gibson began. “I had this idea when I saw the lottery jackpot hit $100 million. It struck me as unfair that one person could win such a massive sum while many others could benefit from smaller amounts. About five years ago, while working on a TV show for Netflix, I revisited this idea. I imagined the concept of finding a magic lamp in real life and receiving three wishes. While it didn’t fit as a TV show, it aligned with my long-standing notion of spreading wealth through a treasure hunting game.”

Gibson continued, “I invested five years and my own funds, along with those of a few partners, to develop the platform for Treasure Game$. We even had lamps made for the inaugural game, ‘Wish Lamps.’ The game launched on January 1, 2024, and within 88 days, the first winners emerged. Now, I believe this is a better way to help people.”

Speaking about the unique aspects of Treasure Game$, Gibson emphasized, “There’s nothing quite like Treasure Game$. Our technology generates clues that vary in difficulty and proximity to the treasure. While technology aids in the hunt, players still need to rely on their treasure hunting skills to uncover the prizes. Additionally, the game incorporates an entertainment component, requiring participants to film and share their adventures. And perhaps most notably, unlike other games, Treasure Game$ offers real-life money treasure.”

As for the game’s rollout, Gibson explained, “We’re activating regions one by one. Currently, region 7 is active, with more to follow in the coming months, providing players across different states with the opportunity to embark on their own treasure hunts.”
