Coventry University is gearing up to showcase its latest technological marvel, a self-driving vehicle, at the highly anticipated Coventry Motofest 2023 taking place this weekend. The university will proudly present the Nissan ENV 200, a cutting-edge fully battery-operated and electric vehicle, to the public as it cruises through parts of Coventry city center on Saturday, June 3. This groundbreaking demonstration is part of the larger Motofest event, drawing in automobile enthusiasts from far and wide.
Kevin Vincent, the Director of Coventry University’s esteemed Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research, expressed his excitement about the vehicle’s participation in the event. He explained, “The vehicle’s purpose is to investigate a range of scenarios around self-driving, connectivity, cyber security, and automated testing to create a resilient self-driving solution for our vehicles of the future.” This ambitious project demonstrates Coventry University’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art 360-degree scanning LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system, the Nissan ENV 200 effectively maps its surroundings, allowing it to navigate with precision. Additionally, the vehicle is fitted with a series of cameras for localization, a forward-facing radar, ultrasound sensors, and a 5G development kit. These advanced features ensure the vehicle operates seamlessly and safely within its environment.
To enhance visitors’ understanding of the vehicle’s capabilities, Kevin Vincent and his team will be on hand during the Motofest event, collaborating with Conigital as part of the CCAV-funded Multi Area Connected and Automated Mobility project (MACAM). They will explain the inner workings of the car and provide an up-close look at the automated system located in the rear, which serves as the vehicle’s “brain.” This system provides the car with instructions, enabling it to drive effortlessly without the need for human intervention.
