HOSHINOYA Kyoto is a ryokan located in Arashiyama, Kyoto, with a river view in all guest rooms. From September 1 to November 30, an autumn stay experience will be offered for guests to enjoy the autumn leaves of Arashiyama. Through guest rooms with autumn river views, and various activities offered only in autumn.

Arashiyama, where HOSHINOYA Kyoto is located, is a scenic area that once flourished as a holiday resort area for nobles of the Heian period. All 25 guest rooms, centered around the garden, face the Oi River, and when the windows are opened, guests can enjoy the refreshing breeze that flows through the valley as well as the seasonal scenery of Arashiyama. In autumn, the reds and yellows of the leaves can be enjoyed from the rooms.

The “Kyo-karakami” wallpaper with beautiful traditional patterns hand-printed one by one, the “Tatami sofas,” an original sofa where its height is calculated so that the viewpoint is the same as a person kneeling, etc are all elements to create a comfortable yet elegant stay with the essence of Kyoto culture.

For breakfast, a morning hot pot with plenty of vegetables and seasonal mushrooms will be served in the chef’s special soup broth. It also comes with grilled fish and tofu, so guests can get their energy from a well-balanced menu. To finish the meal, rice can be added to the soup, which has the flavors of the vegetables and mushrooms, to create savory porridge or “zousui.” The meal can be enjoyed with a view of the autumn leaves shining in the morning light.

Every morning under the maple leaves that are colored with deep red, the “Waterside breathing exercise” is held at the Zen garden, which incorporates stretches with a focus on breathing and meditation. As the birds’ chirp and the sunlight leaks through the trees, guests can refresh themselves through stretching of the body in the morning.

Limited-time activities “Momiji tea ceremony” – a tea ceremony under autumn foliage, momiji
“Momiji tea ceremony” will be hosted at the Zen Garden, where this Japanese dry garden is made using kawara tiles and white sand. The tea ceremony is set up under the maple trees so that guests can look up to enjoy the autumn leaves. Matcha green tea will be served with an autumn confectionery using sweet bean by Kameya Yoshinaga, a Japanese confectionery shop established in 1803.

Hosted at the Zen Garden with a 400-year-old maple tree, colored with deep red, a Gagaku performance will recreate the elegant act of The Tale of Genji. Gagaku is a traditional performance of elegant music and dances, which was historically for the imperial court. The delicate tones of the instruments under the autumn leaves and the graceful dances invite the elegant act of the Heian nobles described in The Tale of Genji. This special event will allow guests to forget their busy daily life and feel the elegance of the performance.

”Morning autumn cruise” – Oi river cruise under the morning sunlight
A private morning cruise with views of autumn foliage on an original yakata boat named Hisui. The same view was once loved by the nobles of the Heian period. Guests can enjoy the autumn leaves glistening in the morning sunlight with Japanese confectionery and matcha green tea.
