In 2024, Apple commenced its Worldwide Developers Conference with a keynote broadcast live from Apple Park, unveiling pioneering technologies and features. Throughout the weeklong event, developers and students gained exclusive access to Apple’s experts, along with insights into new tools, frameworks, and features aimed at enhancing their apps and games.
The keynote introduced Apple Intelligence, a personalized intelligence system integrating generative models with users’ personal contexts, deeply embedded in iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices to provide exceptionally useful and relevant intelligence. Significant updates were also announced for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, highlighted by a comprehensive redesign of the Photos app, groundbreaking productivity enhancements, and innovative ways for users to customize their devices and express themselves.
Additionally, visionOS 2 introduces powerful new interactions for Apple Vision Pro and exciting updates to spatial photos and Mac Virtual Display. tvOS 18 enriches Apple TV+ content with valuable information on users’ larger screens at home.
Starting this month, Apple Vision Pro will expand its availability to include China mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, followed next month by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K.
Apple Intelligence
Apple revealed Apple Intelligence, a system leveraging Apple silicon to comprehend and generate language and images, execute actions across applications, and utilize users’ personal context to streamline and expedite daily activities. At the heart of Apple Intelligence lies on-device processing, ensuring personalized intelligence without compromising user data. Private Cloud Compute establishes a pioneering privacy benchmark in AI by enabling dynamic scaling of computational capacity between on-device processing and dedicated Apple silicon servers running larger, server-based models.
iOS 18
With iOS 18, Apple has introduced features that make the iPhone more personalized and intelligent than ever before. Users gain the ability to arrange apps and widgets freely across the Home Screen, customize Lock Screen buttons, and access additional controls directly from the Control Center. The Photos app undergoes its largest redesign yet, automatically organizing photo libraries into a unified view with easy access to favorite collections. iMessage receives new text effects that animate letters, words, phrases, and emojis, enhancing the visual appeal of conversations. Furthermore, users can now communicate via satellite in the Messages app, ensuring connectivity even in the absence of cellular or Wi-Fi networks.
iPadOS 18
iPadOS 18 enhances the iPad experience with a host of new features and applications tailored for Apple Pencil. The introduction of the Calculator app, integrated with Math Notes, enables users to input or write mathematical expressions and receive instant solutions displayed in their own handwriting. Additionally, Notes introduces new handwriting tools such as Smart Script, enhancing the fluidity, flexibility, and readability of handwritten notes on iPad.
macOS Sequoia
macOS Sequoia introduces enhanced continuity features between iPhone and Mac, highlighted by iPhone Mirroring, which grants users complete access to and control of their iPhone directly from their Mac. Safari receives a significant update with the addition of the Highlights feature, simplifying the discovery of information on webpages during browsing sessions. Gaming experiences become more immersive with Personalized Spatial Audio, placing players at the center of the action like never before. Additionally, Apple Intelligence revolutionizes the Mac experience by offering new tools for enhancing writing, improving communication effectiveness, and generating playful images in seconds. Leveraging the capabilities of Apple silicon and its Neural Engine, Apple Intelligence will be available on every Mac equipped with an M-series chip.
watchOS 11
watchOS 11 introduces significant advancements in health monitoring, personalized features, and connectivity options for Apple Watch users. The new Vitals app provides essential health metrics and contextual information, while the ability to measure training load enhances the workout experience significantly. Customization of the Activity rings is expanded to cater to individual preferences. The Smart Stack and Photos watch faces leverage intelligence to offer greater personalization, and Apple Watch, along with the Health app on iPhone and iPad, enhances support for pregnant users. Additionally, new features including Check In, the Translate app, and enhanced capabilities for the double tap gesture bring added connectivity and convenience to Apple Watch users.
visionOS 2
Shortly after its debut, visionOS 2 revolutionizes spatial computing on Apple Vision Pro, offering users innovative tools and experiences.
