In the latest iOS 17.2 update, users of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can now experience the groundbreaking feature of recording spatial videos. This innovative capability allows users to capture life’s precious moments in a new dimension, and starting early next year, they can relive these memories on Apple Vision Pro.

Enabling spatial video capture in the device’s Settings, users can utilize the advanced camera systems on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture their favorite moments in three dimensions. The spatial videos are recorded in 1080p at 30 frames per second in standard dynamic range. Thanks to advanced computational videography techniques and HEVC compression, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max deliver stunning spatial memories in a compact file size.

Capturing spatial videos on the iPhone is as straightforward as recording regular videos. With the Camera app open in Video mode, users can rotate the iPhone to landscape orientation, tap the spatial video icon, and then hit record. The iPhone simultaneously records video from both the advanced Main and Ultra Wide cameras, adjusting the field of view from the Ultra Wide camera to match that of the Main camera, saving it into a single video file.

Spatial videos, when viewed on the iPhone and other devices, appear as regular 2D videos and can be watched or shared using apps like Messages. A new Spatial album in the Photos app organizes all the spatial videos captured, and with iCloud, these videos sync across users’ devices.

The real magic happens on Apple Vision Pro. Through iCloud, users can access their entire library in the Photos app and view their spatial videos at life-size scale with vibrant color and spectacular detail. On Apple Vision Pro, spatial videos can be played back in a window or expanded into an immersive view, transporting users back to each moment in time, such as a celebration with friends or a special family gathering.

It’s worth noting that spatial video capture on the iPhone arrives ahead of the debut of Apple Vision Pro, allowing users to start capturing moments with family and friends from day one to enjoy on the new platform.
