In today’s release of iOS 17.2, a new iPhone app called Journal is now available to the public. This app is designed to assist users in reflecting and cultivating gratitude through the practice of journaling, a proven method for enhancing overall well-being.
Journal allows users to document and describe everyday occurrences and special moments in their lives. The app enables the inclusion of various multimedia elements, such as photos, videos, audio recordings, and locations, to create detailed and meaningful memories. On top of this, on-device machine learning offers personalized suggestions to inspire journal entries, while customizable notifications aid users in developing consistent writing habits.
The newly introduced Journaling Suggestions API allows third-party journaling apps to propose moments for users to write about, expanding the functionality beyond the app itself.
Getting started with Journal is simple, whether it’s logging a basic text entry or incorporating rich details like photos and videos. Users can seamlessly import content from other apps, such as news articles, music, or podcasts, and write about them within the Journal app. Past entries can be browsed, bookmarked, and filtered based on specific details like photos, workouts, and locations. Scheduled notifications are available to encourage regular journaling.
The app’s intelligently curated suggestions are tailored to help users recall and write about significant moments in their lives, ranging from new places visited to photos taken and songs played. These suggestions, derived from user activity, include writing prompts for meaningful insights and daily reflection prompts focusing on gratitude, kindness, and purpose. Users have control over the type of content suggested and can use these prompts to create journal entries.
Privacy is a key focus in the design of Journal. When the iPhone is locked with a passcode, entries in the Journal app are encrypted. Users can opt to enable secondary authentication, securing the Journal app with their device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. All Journal entries stored in iCloud are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring exclusive access for the user. Journaling suggestions are generated on the device, allowing users to choose which moments are shared with the app and added to their entries, ensuring a personalized and secure experience unique to the iPhone.
