After the most thrilling season in the history of the Drift Masters European Championship, Conor Shanahan, the Irish driver, lived out a dream night at the PGE Narodowy stadium in Warsaw, Poland, in front of a 53,000-strong crowd. Shanahan not only emerged victorious at the world’s largest drifting event but also secured the prestigious title of 2023 Drift Masters European Championship champion for the very first time. Here’s the comprehensive rundown:

At the outset of the weekend, six contenders were in the mix for the season’s top honors: Conor Shanahan, Lauri Heinonen, Jack Shanahan, Juha Rintanen, Piotr Wiecek, and Duane McKeever. Yet, it was Conor Shanahan, the 20-year-old younger brother, who ended the weekend on the highest note, achieving an exceptional double victory that encompassed not only the race win but also the championship title in spectacular fashion.

Shanahan faced a daunting task, commencing with a fifth-place finish in the final qualifying session of the season. He had to navigate through a fiercely competitive field of drivers who presented formidable challenges. Notably, Shanahan had to vanquish Finnish driver Mika Keski-Korpi during the Top 32 round before locking horns with the Polish wildcard driver, David Sposób, in the Top 16.

Subsequently, Shanahan conquered the in-form Portuguese driver Diogo Correi, setting the stage for a critical Final 4 showdown against the Polish driver Pawel Korpulinski. This clash turned out to be a pivotal moment in the young Irishman’s pursuit of the championship.

In a fitting culmination of the season and a moment that finally calmed his nerves, Shanahan clinched the championship title by defeating the beloved Polish fan-favorite, who would later secure third place on the day, in a “one more time” battle during the Top 4 stage. This paved the way for a dream final against his closest championship rival, Lauri Heinonen, who secured the second-place finish.

To the ecstatic delight of the record-breaking crowd, Shanahan and Heinonen, with the title already in Shanahan’s grasp, unleashed an electrifying final that surpassed all that had come before it.

– Although he didn’t emerge as the night’s victor, the Finnish driver still secured the second spot in the championship standings, capping off his most successful season in Drift Masters.

– Fellow Finn Juha Rintanen claimed the third position for the season, finishing ahead of the 2022 champion, Piotr Wiecek. Meanwhile, the older Shanahan brother, Jack, settled for fifth place, ahead of fellow Irish driver Duane McKeever.

Final Standings for the 2023 Drift Masters European Championship:

– Conor Shanahan (IRE) – 459 points

– Lauri Heinonen (FIN) – 415 points

– Juha Rintanen (FIN) – 359 points

– Piotr Wiecek (POL) – 341 points

– Jack Shanahan (IRE) – 328 points
