The Portrait mode on these devices has seen remarkable improvements, offering sharper details, more vibrant colors, and enhanced low-light performance. An exciting feature is the ability to take portraits without switching to Portrait mode, thanks to automatic depth information capture when a person, dog, cat, or a tapped focal point is detected in the frame. This innovation allows users to transform regular photos into stunning portraits later within the Photos app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Creative control is also enhanced as users can adjust the focus point post-capture.

The devices bring significant improvements to Night mode, thanks to the Photonic Engine and LiDAR scanner, which also enable Night mode portraits. Smart HDR has been advanced to deliver lifelike skin tones and improved rendering of highlights, midtones, and shadows in photos. Notably, these enhancements are available for third-party apps, ensuring that shared images look their best online.

In terms of hardware and performance, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are powered by the groundbreaking A17 Pro chip, built using a 3-nanometer process. This chip represents a significant leap forward, featuring a redesigned GPU, a CPU that’s up to 10 percent faster with microarchitectural and design improvements, and a Neural Engine that’s up to 2 times faster. The pro-class GPU, now 20 percent faster, opens the door to smoother graphics and more immersive augmented reality (AR) applications and gaming experiences. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing, four times faster than software-based ray tracing, further enhances graphics, making these devices a compelling choice for gamers. In fact, they offer console-quality titles like Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, offering a truly immersive gaming experience.

A17 Pro also introduces a dedicated AV1 decoder, improving the efficiency and quality of video streaming services. Additionally, a new USB controller enables USB 3 speeds on the iPhone for the first time, supporting higher transfer speeds and video output up to 4K at 60 fps HDR.

For content creators and filmmakers, these devices offer advanced pro workflows. Users can enjoy up to 20 times faster transfer speeds with an optional USB 3 cable, allowing for swift transfer of 48MP ProRAW images from the iPhone to a Mac. ProRes video recording is available directly to external storage, enabling higher recording options up to 4K at 60 fps, providing more flexibility when using the iPhone as the main camera. Another noteworthy feature is the support for Log encoding, and these devices are the first smartphones worldwide to support ACES, the Academy Color Encoding System, a globally recognized standard for color workflows.

Looking ahead, iPhone 15 Pro will introduce spatial video capture for Apple Vision Pro, allowing users to record three-dimensional moments and relive them with incredible depth on Apple Vision Pro when it becomes available in the U.S. early next year.

The iPhone 15 Pro lineup introduces a range of convenient features. Both models utilize the USB-C connector, providing a universal standard for charging and data transfer. This connector enables users to charge not only their iPhone but also their Mac, iPad, and updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation) using the same cable. Furthermore, AirPods or Apple Watch can be charged directly from the iPhone using the USB-C connector. These devices support USB 3 for data transfer speeds up to 10 gigabits per second, a significant improvement over previous iterations.

Both models incorporate the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, extending the range of connection between two iPhone devices with this chip to three times the previous distance. This enhanced connectivity opens up new possibilities, such as Precision Finding for Find My friends, allowing iPhone 15 users to share their location and locate each other even in crowded settings. Notably, Precision Finding maintains the privacy protections inherent in Find My.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Wi-Fi 6E for superior wireless performance, offering up to 2 times faster speeds. Additionally, they are the first smartphones to introduce Thread support, paving the way for future Home app integrations.

Both models are equipped with super-fast 5G connectivity, and they include support for MagSafe and future Qi2 wireless charging standards. Audio quality on phone calls, including those made on FaceTime or third-party apps, has been improved, with the option to select Voice Isolation for clear conversations even in noisy environments. These devices also incorporate eSIM technology with support from over 295 carriers worldwide, offering flexibility and convenience for international travelers.

The iPhone 15 lineup is committed to user safety, featuring critical capabilities such as Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite, currently available in 14 countries and regions across three continents, with plans to expand to Spain and Switzerland later this month. Building upon this satellite infrastructure, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max introduce Roadside Assistance via satellite, initially in the U.S. This feature allows users to connect to AAA, the country’s largest roadside assistance provider, in situations where cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. An intuitive interface streamlines the process, transmitting essential information via satellite for efficient assistance. Access to Roadside Assistance via satellite is included free for two years, with service coverage according to AAA membership but also available as a standalone service for non-members.

– NameDrop simplifies sharing contact information and content via AirDrop and allows users to send large files over the internet.

– StandBy provides a customizable full-screen experience with glanceable information, perfect for when the iPhone is on its side and charging, utilizing the Always-On display of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

– Interactive widgets on the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and in StandBy offer quick actions, allowing users to complete tasks or control media playback with a single tap.

– Safari enhances privacy in Private Browsing and introduces profiles, enabling users to separate their browsing activities for work and personal purposes.

iOS 17 includes further updates such as the Journal app for journaling and practicing gratitude, improvements to autocorrect and Dictation, password and passkey sharing with iCloud Keychain, and more.

Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company continues its efforts to achieve its 2030 goal of making every product carbon neutral. To this end, Apple is emphasizing clean electricity throughout its supply chain and using recycled and low-carbon materials in product design. These devices incorporate more recycled content, including a 100 percent recycled aluminum substructure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. Additionally, they feature 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100 percent recycled gold in the USB‑C connector, gold plating, and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The packaging is over 99 percent fiber-based, aligning with Apple’s objective to eliminate plastic from packaging by 2025. Furthermore, the devices meet stringent energy efficiency standards and are free of mercury, PVC, and beryllium.
