McLaren is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a groundbreaking super-GT unveiled at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. This milestone celebration takes place at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, UK.

This unique super-GT was born from a collaboration inspired by Formula 1 between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, making it a distinct chapter in McLaren’s history. The events at the McLaren Technology Centre not only pay tribute to the car but also honor the individuals who played a pivotal role in its creation, many of whom are still part of the McLaren team.

During the festivities, four exceptional examples of this grand tourer were showcased on the MTC Boulevard, including the SLR Stirling Moss, an SLR by MSO, an SLR HDK, and the SLR 722 GT Prototype. Alongside these vehicles were artifacts and items tracing the development journey of this iconic car. The SLR Club, an international association of Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren owners, added to the celebrations by visiting MTC and meeting with some of the McLaren team members who contributed to this remarkable project, marking two decades of the car’s existence.

The story of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren began with its announcement at the 1999 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. It was confirmed that McLaren would partner with Mercedes-Benz to bring the Mercedes-Benz SLR Vision concept, initially showcased at the 1999 Detroit Auto Show, from concept to reality as a production car, known as ‘Project 7.’

The collaboration between McLaren and Mercedes-Benz extended from 1995 to 2009 in Formula 1, during which McLaren secured four Formula 1 World Championships (Constructors’ champions in 1998 and Drivers’ champions in 1998, 1999, and 2008). This winning combination of McLaren’s chassis expertise and carbon fiber technology with Mercedes engine power was replicated for owners of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

The first Project 7 prototype was assembled by a team of former Formula 1 McLaren mechanics who later joined forces with automotive engineers to create the core team responsible for bringing the car into production. It became the first car to be hand-assembled at the newly opened MTC at the time.

Despite adhering closely to Mercedes’ design requirements and the Vision SLR concept’s aesthetics, groundbreaking engineering was essential to achieve this vision. This innovation leveraged McLaren’s extensive experience with carbon fiber composites gained from decades in Formula 1 and the McLaren F1 road car.

Complementing these cutting-edge materials was a 5.5-liter supercharged V8 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG, delivering 626PS and 780Nm of torque. This engine powered the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, resulting in performance that rivaled the supercars of its era. It could sprint from 0 to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 208mph.

Production of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which began as Project 7, concluded in December 2009. However, this did not mark the end of McLaren’s involvement with the car. In 2010, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) introduced the McLaren Edition SLR, an enhancement package based on invaluable feedback from SLR owners and MSO customers. This version of the SLR, limited to only 25 units, featured significant bodywork modifications, including a new aerodynamically sculpted front apron, larger front splitter, new side intakes, a larger rear wing, and a revised rear diffuser. Additionally, lighter wheels were incorporated. MSO also made revisions to the suspension and power steering assistance.

Subsequently, MSO continued to develop further enhancement and redesign packages. In 2019, they introduced the SLR by MSO, a comprehensive upgrade program driven by feedback from owners over the decade since the car went out of production. This program included a new aerodynamic package, weight-saving measures, and luxurious appointments, such as special quilted leather upholstery. These upgrades were available as a complete package or as individual components.

In May 2023, MSO completed the delivery of the first SLR High Downforce Kit (HDK) conversions to customers. These vehicles featured bodywork alterations directly inspired by the 722 GT racer, a track-oriented version of the car. With a 60mm increase in track width at the front and rear, the HDK cars presented a more imposing stance, accentuated by a wide body kit with flared wheel arches and a rear wing reminiscent of the one found on the McLaren F1 GTR. Weight reduction and increased exhaust volume were achieved by removing silencers from an exhaust system featuring large, single exits on both sides of the car. All 12 SLR HDKs produced were already sold.
