Audi has taken a significant step by integrating the world’s largest video platform, YouTube, into the infotainment systems of selected car models. They’ve introduced a new app store that allows customers to access popular third-party apps seamlessly through the Multimedia Interface (MMI) using a data link within the vehicle. This includes the availability of the YouTube app for the first time, and video streaming will be launched in certain Audi models during the summer of 2023, with other VW Group brands following suit.

With over 500 hours of content being uploaded to YouTube every minute, Audi drivers of selected models can now enjoy their favorite content right from the YouTube app integrated into their car’s infotainment system. This feature was made possible through collaboration with Volkswagen’s software company CARIAD and their partner HARMAN Ignite, resulting in the creation of the new app store that allows users to integrate various apps like music, video, gaming, navigation, parking, productivity, weather, and news, directly into their vehicles to cater to their personal preferences. The YouTube app, along with others, is directly installed into Audi’s MMI system, eliminating the need for a smartphone as an intermediary.

The integration of YouTube brings added convenience and entertainment during charging stops or driving breaks, as passengers can enjoy live streams, news, and videos from popular YouTubers. Just like the YouTube app on a smartphone, users can simply tap the app icon in the MMI after installing it from the store. However, Audi has prioritized safety, allowing occupants to play videos only when the vehicle is parked.

For drivers who are YouTube Premium members, there’s an additional benefit of accessing ad-free content once they log in. This move signifies the first video platform to be available for download via Audi’s new native app store, a part of Audi’s goal to create an open ecosystem of popular apps and turn their vehicles into smart companions for users. This ambitious project is being developed in collaboration with Volkswagen’s CARIAD and Samsung subsidiary HARMAN.

To use third-party apps like YouTube, a data link is necessary, which is established through an embedded SIM permanently integrated into the vehicle. In Europe, data costs are conveniently billed by data volume by Cubic Telecom. Moreover, Audi models will continue to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via the optional smartphone interface feature.

Starting from the 2024 model year, YouTube will be available in selected models equipped with the latest hardware and software cluster of the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3), such as the Audi A4/A5, Q5, A6/A7, A8, Q8 e-tron, and Audi e-tron GT quattro. These models will have the option to be equipped with the store ex-factory throughout the European market, Canada, and the United States. Eventually, the system will be expanded to other regions and other Volkswagen Group brands.
