Freeport A’Famosa Outlet has debuted the world’s first Coach Airways, an exceptional retail concept store and café located within a converted 1981 Boeing 747-230B aircraft. Since its inauguration in January 2016, Freeport A’Famosa Outlet has been at the forefront of the outlet industry, consistently striving to engage customers and establish a distinct brand identity through innovative approaches.
Renowned Australian architect, in collaboration with a Dutch heritage concept, has crafted the design of Freeport A’Famosa Outlet, an open-air mall that showcases lush landscapes, five water features, a lake, four parks and lawns, a windmill, and a carousel. Encompassing an impressive 180,000 square feet, this outlet encompasses more than 80 esteemed fashion, sports, and accessories brands. Furthermore, an adaptable Exhibition and Convention Centre, spanning 20,000 square feet of column-free space, enhances the outlet’s offerings with its multipurpose functionality.
Commencing in April 2021, this ambitious endeavor involved the acquisition, transportation, assembly, and finalization of the Boeing 747, culminating in May 2023. Measuring a length of 231 feet 10 inches and a wingspan of 195 feet 8 inches, the Boeing 747 was once celebrated as the largest civilian aircraft worldwide in the late 1960s. Today, it assumes a novel role as the world’s pioneer Coach outlet situated within a Boeing 747 aircraft.
YAB Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Bin Yusoh, the Chief Minister of Malacca, expressed his enthusiasm about the launch of Coach Airways, stating that it represents a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to enhancing its tourism offerings for the public. He mentioned that this initiative aligns with the goals of Visit Malacca 2024 to attract targeted visitors. According to him, beyond being a shopping destination, Coach Airways symbolizes luxury and prestige for all Malaysians, particularly the people of Malacca.
Datuk Julian Lau, the Director of Freeport A’Famosa Outlet, shared that the project had been underway for the past two years and required immense effort from the team to transform the mega Boeing 747 Jumbo into an exclusive and unparalleled retail destination in collaboration with Coach. He added that since the opening of Freeport A’Famosa, their aim has always been to create innovative experiences for visitors. This latest addition, he said, adds to their offerings by providing Malaysians and tourists with a fun and immersive shopping experience, allowing them to explore the cockpit, passenger and lounge cabins while browsing Coach’s collections.
The Boeing 747, affectionately known as “The Queen of the Sky,” has now taken on the role of “The Queen of Retail,” combining aviation history with shopping. The spacious layout of the plane creates a comfortable and memorable shopping environment reminiscent of the golden age of air travel, where luxury and elegance were paramount.
Upon entering the store, customers will receive an entry pass resembling an air ticket, simulating an air travel experience right from the entrance via an air bridge. Customers can explore the interior of the plane and its retail cabins, where they will find a curated selection of ready-to-wear clothing, bags, and travel accessories inspired by the expressive approach to fashion of the next generation.
Coach will also introduce an exclusive Coach Airways Collection, featuring items such as t-shirts, a passport leather case, a wheeled carry-on luggage, a field tote, as well as travel accessories like luggage tags, pouches, and small wallets. These items will be printed with a limited-edition reimagination of the house’s iconic Signature.
Campbell O’Shea, the General Manager of Tapestry Southeast Asia & Oceania, expressed his excitement about the opening of Coach Airways, stating that it not only marks the launch of their first-of-its-kind retail concept but also represents a moment of innovation for Coach as they continue to create a space where customers can explore and interact. He mentioned that they look forward to providing customers with this experiential retail pop-up at Freeport A’Famosa Outlet, a popular shopping destination in Malacca.
Dato’ Dr. Ammar Abd. Ghapar, the Director-General of Tourism Malaysia, was also present at the event and congratulated the management team of Freeport A’Famosa Outlet for achieving recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records for the “First Retail Concept Store in an Airplane.” He commended the state of Malacca for its numerous accolades and encouraged Malaysians to excel in various fields to surpass global standards.
The Malaysian Association of Theme Parks & Family Attractions (MATFA) recently recognized Freeport A’Famosa Outlet as the recipient of the “Unique Retail Experience” award for 2023. This prestigious accolade solidifies the outlet’s reputation as a must-visit destination, where fashion, history, and innovation seamlessly come together to create an unforgettable retail experience.
Coach Airways, situated within Freeport A’Famosa Outlet, aims to offer guests a distinctive and value-added shopping experience while appealing to a wider customer base and driving sales. In addition to the retail area, the aircraft has been transformed to include a welcoming space, an immersive gallery, and a contemporary café. These additional features provide guests with an opportunity to relax, enjoy refreshments, and soak in the unique atmosphere of the converted aircraft.
With its fusion of retail and aviation, Coach Airways is positioned to become a global attraction that captivates guests, allowing their imagination to take flight.
