Apple has made an announcement regarding its latest privacy and security innovations, which include significant updates to Safari Private Browsing, Communication Safety, and Lockdown Mode, along with improvements to app privacy. Moreover, Apple has introduced new features called Check In, NameDrop, and Live Voicemail, which prioritize privacy and security. These endeavors reflect Apple’s strong belief in privacy as a fundamental human right, emphasizing the importance of robust security measures.
According to Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, privacy is an integral part of every new Apple product and feature, starting from their inception. The company’s focus is to empower users to have control over their data by consistently offering cutting-edge privacy features and the highest level of data security globally. This approach is exemplified by the significant updates to Safari Private Browsing and the expansion of Lockdown Mode.
The latest update to Safari Private Browsing builds upon its existing features, making it even more effective in safeguarding users’ privacy. Unlike any other browser, Safari had introduced private browsing years ago. Now, with this significant update, users enjoy enhanced protection against trackers while browsing the web and against potential unauthorized access to their devices. Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections have been strengthened to prevent websites from utilizing the most recent tracking techniques or identifying a user’s device. Notably, Private Browsing now automatically locks when inactive, enabling users to retain open tabs even when away from their devices.
The Photos app introduces privacy permission improvements, offering users greater control over sharing specific photos with apps while keeping the rest of their photo library private. When apps request access to the entire photo library, users will receive more detailed information about the data they’ll be sharing, accompanied by occasional reminders of their choices.
To enhance privacy in Messages, Mail, and Safari Private Browsing, Apple has implemented link tracking protection. This feature removes additional tracking information from shared links while ensuring they still function properly. Users can now share links without compromising their privacy in these applications.
App privacy has also been enhanced with new tools that provide developers with more insights into the data practices of third-party software development kits (SDKs) used in their apps. This enables developers to provide more accurate Privacy Nutrition Labels and reinforces the integrity of the software supply chain by supporting signatures for third-party SDKs, adding an extra layer of protection against potential abuse.
Communication Safety, a feature designed to protect children using Messages, now includes video content in addition to still images. Developers can now integrate Communication Safety into their own apps using a new API. The feature also extends its protective measures to AirDrop, FaceTime video messages, receiving Contact Posters, and selecting content through the Photos picker. All image and video processing for Communication Safety occurs on the device, ensuring that neither Apple nor any third party can access the content. This warning system is activated by default for child accounts in a Family Sharing plan but can be disabled by parents.
For adult users, Sensitive Content Warning helps avoid unwanted exposure to nude images and videos in Messages, AirDrop, FaceTime video messages, and the Phone app when receiving a Contact Poster. This optional feature uses the same privacy-preserving technology as Communication Safety, ensuring that image and video processing takes place solely on the device and remains inaccessible to Apple or any third party.
To simplify and enhance password and passkey sharing, users can now create password-sharing groups. In these groups, everyone can contribute and edit passwords, ensuring they stay up to date. Sharing occurs through iCloud Keychain, guaranteeing end-to-end encryption. Additionally, Safari now automatically autofills one-time verification codes received in Mail, streamlining the secure login process within the browser.
Lockdown Mode expands its protections to safeguard individuals who may be targeted by mercenary spyware due to their identities or professions. These expanded protections include safer wireless connectivity defaults, improved media handling and sharing defaults, enhanced sandboxing, and network security optimizations. Enabling Lockdown Mode further strengthens device defenses and restricts certain functionalities, significantly reducing the attack surface for individuals who require heightened protection. Moreover, Lockdown Mode will also be supported on watchOS.
Apple has introduced additional features that prioritize privacy and security. One such feature is Check In, which allows users to inform their friends or family members that they have safely arrived at their destination. Once activated, Check In automatically detects when the user reaches their intended destination and notifies selected contacts via Messages. If the user deviates from their planned route or fails to respond to Check In prompts, the feature shares essential information, such as the user’s precise location, battery level, cell service status, and last active time on their iPhone, with the designated contacts. Check In empowers users to maintain control over their information by enabling them to choose whom to share it with and for how long. Users have the flexibility to end the Check In session at any time. The information transmitted through Check In is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that only the intended recipients can access it, not Apple or any other party.
NameDrop introduces a new AirDrop experience that allows users to share their contact information selectively with intended recipients. By holding their iPhone near another device, users can transfer specific contact details while retaining control over the information they prefer not to share. Additionally, NameDrop enables users to share photos and links in the same secure manner. Apple Watch users can also utilize NameDrop by tapping the Share button in the Contacts app’s My Card section or using the My Card watch face complication, then bringing their Apple Watch in proximity to another Apple Watch. As with all AirDrop features, these new capabilities ensure content is securely shared over an encrypted connection.
Live Voicemail enhances the call answering experience by providing users with real-time transcriptions of incoming voicemail messages. Users can see a live transcription as the caller speaks, allowing them to decide whether to answer the call. When Silence Unknown Callers is enabled, calls from unknown numbers are directed straight to Live Voicemail without causing the phone to ring. Calls identified as spam by carriers are instantly declined, further relieving users of potential privacy-invading spam or scam calls. Live Voicemail leverages the power of the Neural Engine and performs all processing on the device, assuring users that this information remains private and is not shared with Apple.
These features will be available through free software updates in the upcoming fall.
