Rolex has introduced two new versions of its Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, marking the return of 18 ct yellow gold to the model. The first version features a yellow Rolesor design, which combines Oystersteel and yellow gold, while the second version is crafted entirely from this precious metal. Both versions have similar features, including a two-color, 24-hour graduated monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in grey and black ceramic, and a powdered yellow-colored ‘GMT-Master II’ name on the dial.
They are also fitted with a Jubilee bracelet, an Oysterlock clasp, and the Easylink comfort extension link. The GMT-Master II is powered by calibre 3285, a cutting-edge movement that enables it to display the date and an additional time zone in 24-hour format, as well as the hours, minutes, and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, guaranteeing excellent performance on the wrist. The GMT-Master was originally designed as a navigation aid for professionals traveling across different time zones. Over time, it became the watch of choice for travelers, with a unique and easily recognizable design featuring a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated insert.
The GMT-Master II evolved continually to offer increasing technical performance, and in 1982, Rolex unveiled a version with a movement that allowed the hour hand to be set independently of the other hands. With its traditional hour, minute, and seconds hands, triangle-tipped 24-hour hand, and bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, the GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and the reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone. The date is synchronized with the local time.
Rolex has pioneered the development of high-tech ceramic materials for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts that are scratch-resistant, environmentally resistant, and inert. The brand has developed its own expertise and innovative manufacturing methods to produce these ceramic components independently. The new versions of the GMT-Master II feature a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert in grey and black ceramic. The graduations and numerals are coated with yellow gold via PVD, and the bezel has a knurled edge for an excellent grip. Rolesor, the combination of gold and Oystersteel, has been a trademark feature of Rolex since 1933.
The yellow Rolesor version of the GMT-Master II features a bezel, winding crown, and bracelet center links in yellow gold, while the middle case, case back, and bracelet outer links are in Oystersteel. This combination of metals provides an elegant and reliable performance that is a hallmark of Rolex watches. The 40mm Oyster case of the new versions of the GMT-Master II is waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel or 18 ct yellow gold, while the case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire with an anti-reflective coating, and it features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.
The new GMT-Master II models are equipped with the 3285 calibre, a mechanical movement developed and produced entirely by Rolex. Introduced in 2018, the self-winding movement boasts high precision, a long power reserve, convenience, and reliability. The patented Chronergy escapement, made of nickel-phosphorus, provides efficiency and dependability. The movement features a blue Parachrom hairspring with great stability and resistance to temperature variations and shocks. The oscillator is mounted on Paraflex shock absorbers, which increase shock resistance, and the oscillating weight is fitted with an optimized ball bearing. The power reserve of calibre 3285 lasts for about 70 hours due to its barrel architecture and superior efficiency. The Jubilee bracelet, a five-piece link bracelet designed for the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, provides comfort and is equipped with the Oysterlock folding safety clasp and Easylink comfort extension link. The bracelet in 18 ct yellow gold also features patented ceramic inserts to improve its flexibility and durability.
