Petty Officer 3rd Class Moises Saavedra serves with Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 71, which operates out of San Diego, California. The squadron’s primary mission involves sea control operations in open-ocean and coastal environments, which includes searching for submarines, and surface targets over the horizon, and conducting search and rescue operations. Saavedra is a native of Buena Park, California, and joined the Navy two years ago after graduating from Buena Park High School in 2019. He wanted to help his family, serve his country, and see the world.

Saavedra credits his strong work ethic to his upbringing and previous experience working for his family’s company. He is now part of the helicopter squadron that flies the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, which are used for various purposes such as anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, drug interdiction, and special operations.

The Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally over the past 50 years. Navy officials emphasize that the security of undersea fiber optic cables and the prosperity of the United States are directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy. Admiral Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, believes that the Navy’s mission is timeless and aims to provide citizens with a fully combat-ready Navy, focused on warfighting excellence and superior leadership at every level.

Saavedra is proud of his accomplishments during his military service, including successfully deploying for 10 months and achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He believes that serving in the Navy and being part of its family, history, and heritage is being part of something bigger than oneself. Saavedra is grateful for his family’s constant support and care while serving in the Navy.
