Seaman Emma Jones, a Laguna Hills native and 2017 graduate of Laguna Hills High School, is currently serving aboard the USS Boxer, a U.S. Navy warship homeported in San Diego, California. Jones joined the Navy two and a half years ago, citing her desire to gain life experience and college benefits as reasons for enlisting.
The skills and values that Jones learned in Laguna Hills, such as standing up for herself and believing in her capabilities, are mirrored in the Navy’s ethos. With a crew of approximately 1,200, the USS Boxer can accommodate up to 1,800 Marines and is responsible for transferring Marines, equipment, and supplies while supporting helicopters or other aircraft.
Navy officials emphasize that the security of undersea fiber optic cables and the transportation of 90% of global commerce by sea are critical to the United States’ prosperity. As such, trained sailors and a strong Navy are essential to maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.
Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, affirmed the Navy’s commitment to its mission, stating, “Our mission remains timeless – to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat-ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level. This is our calling, and I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”
Seaman Jones and her fellow sailors aboard the USS Boxer embody this dedication and service as an integral part of the Navy’s efforts to maintain national security and global stability.
Seaman Emma Jones, a lab technician serving aboard the USS Boxer, emphasizes the crucial role of the Navy in national defense. Jones affirms that as members of the Navy, they are the “one percent” who protect their families back home and ensure their safety, providing them with a sense of comfort and security.
Military service also presents numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth, and Jones takes great pride in her achievements. Graduating with honors from her job-specific school, where only about 30% of people graduate, stands out as one of her proudest accomplishments. This accomplishment has set her up for a successful future outside of the military.
Serving in the Navy is not only about personal growth and achievement for Jones. It also means having honor and pride in her work and enjoying stability in her life.
Jones acknowledges the invaluable support of her family in achieving her goals and pursuing her Navy career. She expresses her gratitude towards her mom, dad, and brother, Brett, who has always been supportive and motivated her to do her best.
Jones and other sailors aboard the USS Boxer continue to serve their country with honor and dedication, protecting the nation’s interests and maintaining peace and stability across the globe.
